How do I stop my cat from getting feces caught in his fur?
Q. My ragdoll cat (mildly long-haired) keeps getting feces caught in the fur around his back legs/anus area. He's not having diarrhea, because I see his "presents" in his litter box. At any rate, does anyone have any solution to this? I was thinking maybe I could shave his hair in the back?

How to get cat feces off of cement basement floor?
Q. Our house is a very clean one but our basement could use some work. We're not dirty or anything. We just have a little problem with our cat who at times uses the basement as his litter box. I'm wondering how to get the stains out. It's gotten out of control lately and is overwhelming at times. I just need to know where to start and how to get the job done without hiring professionals. We have moved the cats box upstairs and he seems to be doing fine with that. HELP ME!!! I have to have this done by the 22 or sometime close to that date.

A. If water is no concern, I would try a high pressure cleaner. You could also try to let a hydrogen peroxide solution work for a few hours to "bleach" the stains.

How do you remove stains from dog or cat feces off hardwood floors?
Q.
Asked by - Mon Mar 22 22:35:38 2010 - Cleaning & Laundry - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Not very easily. I would have to see it first before I could give you an accurate answer. Just off the top of my head I would say scrub them really good with warm (not cold) soapy water. Be careful about how long you leave the water on as it may cause the boards to warp. Is this an actual hardwood floor or is it that thin stuff that I cannot think of the name of right now. If it is the thin stuff you may have to replace it. If it is an actual hardwood floor you may have to rent a sander and refinish the floor. I highly recommend that you go to the DIY network's website at They have excellent advice there on how to do this yourself and save a bundle of money. Heck they may even have tips on how to clean it up without going to all the… [cont.]

How would I get the smell of cat feces off the carpet without hurting the carpet?
Q. My cat has been pooping on the carpet and I would like to clean it to get rid of the sent so she can't smell it, but how?

A. I highly recommend the product Nature's Miracle. It's an enzymatic stain remover which breaks down and consumes the bacteria that causes pet odors. Because it breaks down the bacteria it removes the hidden scents that encourage marking and continued urination/defecation in that same spot. So far this has been the only product that has worked consistently for me on all types of pet stains (urine, feces and vomit) and on a variety of fabrics and surfaces. You can pick it up at basically any pet specialty shop, or order online.

why does my cat get feces behind his litter box onto the floor and it is a large litter box.?
Q. My cat sometimes gets feces behind his litter box onto the floor or on the back of the box when he uses it as if the litter box isn't big enough for him or he will push the feces out behind the litter box onto the floor as he's trying to cover his business. He does not do this intentionally it's just that his behind must be hanging over the back of the litter box but it is a large litter box so I don't think it's becarse it's too small.
Asked by - Fri Mar 25 19:28:04 2011 - Cats - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There are a couple of approaches. If you wish to stick with a non-covered litter box, then one with high sides would be a solution. If it is a result of vigorous shoveling, and it is pushed out of the litter box, then a framed litter box will work. It has an edge, and cats rarely can shovel over it. But most likely he doesn't realize his butt end is hanging over the edge of the box, and the sides are not high enough. Just because it is a large box, doesn't mean he is required to squat in the center of the box.

I'm being serious, I'm curious as to why dogs go into the cat litter box and eat the cat feces?
Q. My dogs insist on eating the cat feces out of the cat litter box. I scoop the litter box throughout the day, but sometimes they go and the dogs get to it before I am able to clean it out. Is it the taste of the feces or are they lacking something or just plain disgusting? Is it harmful? Like I said, it's not often they do this because I try to get the litter box scooped after every use so, it's not like a daily thing they are doing this, just when the cat snuck a trip in there without me knowing. Thanks for the input in advance.

A. It is a very common thing for dogs to sneak some cat feces. Almost every cat owner I know who also has a dog has reported this problem. A litter box is irresistible to most dogs, for a variety of reasons -- ranging from diet deficiency to taste to curiosity. It's probably not the best thing for your dog to be ingesting the bits of litter along with the poop! :) The most surefire thing to do is to place the litterbox in an area where the cat has access, but the dog doesn't (perhaps in a higher-up area, or in a room that you don't allow the dogs in). Every time you catch the dog eating cat feces, command your dog to "leave it" and reward your dog with a treat for obeying. Make sure you have your dog on a premium kibble so its… [cont.]

is there any kind of disease that can be contracted from constant exposure to cat feces and urine - the smell?
Q. i need help - there are cats living under the house I rent and there is cat feces and urine all under the house and obviously coming up through vents - any health hazard with that?
Asked by crunksgirl15 - Mon Mar 13 10:36:59 2006 - Cats - 7 Answers - Comments

A. There is NO health hazard from the ODOR. Pregnant women should avoid cat feces as it MAY carry the toxoplasmosis parasite which can cause fetal defects and problems. They may wear gloves and wash hands and change a litter box safely, especially with an indoor cat. The smell alone is not harmful, although distastefull. I suggest you call your local animal control or wildlife nuissance center and see if they can trap the cats under the house. Unneutered males produce a STRONG smelling urine. Once they are captured, do some work with boards and mesh and seal off the cralwspace to no more cats get there. But you have no health hazard from the oros entering the house.

Why is my dog suddenly eating cat feces?
Q. Why has my 2 year old dog suddenly started eating cat feces?
Asked by Kelley - Thu Oct 23 10:30:59 2008 - Dogs - 9 Answers - Comments

A. Most dogs so it at some point or another as disgusting as it may be. Dogs are looking for vitamins, nutrients and minerals their bodies might night be getting enough of. Eventually (in about a year or 2) the dog will stop on their own. However if you switch their food to a healthier brand with more nutrients in it, it will encourage them to stop sooner. In the mean time you can also block off the cat box (if that is the source where they get it) from your dog.Exp. put it in a room with a gate so cats can jump over the gate but not the dog.

Is cat feces harmful for the soil or plants?
Q. We have 3 beautiful cats in our yard, but my mom worries about cat feces and if they're harmful for our yard plants and soil.
Asked by Huldran - Sat Feb 21 04:01:49 2009 - Garden & Landscape - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Feces from meat eating animals always has the potential to contain harmful pathogens and is almost never a desirable addition to soil in which you will be growing any food crops. I wouldn't add cat or dog poo to compost used for food crops either. If they are indoor cats and you use something compostable (like wood shavings) in the litter box, you could make a small compost pile for the cat litter and use it on ornamentals after composting for at least 6 months. If the cats live outdoors, I don't think there's much you can do to control where they use the toilet. If there is a specific part of the garden that you want to keep them out of, try laying down some chicken wire or hardware cloth. They won't like walking on it and should keep out… [cont.]

My dog keeps eating cat feces and hiding under things?
Q. It started a couple weeks ago. He never did before, he's around 3 years old. Suddenly now he eats of of the cats litterbox (Ew!) And hides under things and sleeps. He seems to be acting normal otherwise. What's wrong with him and what can I do?
Asked by Sazuki Lockheart - Mon Jan 17 13:36:22 2011 - Dogs - 3 Answers - Comments

A. You have to immediately close off his access to the litter box. Dogs see a litter box and they think Kitty Caviar. The poops are bad enough for him on their own and can cause a nasty gastroenteritis - diarrhea, belly pain, vomiting. But even worse is the litter that sticks to the poop. It can cause a serious problem - severe constipation and even a mechanical obstruction. And clumping kitty litter is the worst. The lack of energy and hiding under things and sleeping may be perfectly normal. If he doesn't have a crate, he is probably hiding under things for one of two reasons. He may be sneaking the poops and taking them someplace where he thinks he is "hiding" and can safely eat it without you catching him. The other reason he… [cont.]

A. The feces itself no it won't cause a problem, however if you are dumping any cat litter down the toilet it can eventually clog the pipes unless you are using a flushable litter. (about the only flushable litters now are the corn and wheat based ones)
