What is the syrup brown ooze forming on the wooden parts of my house?
Q. I thing it is bug ooze. Maybe even termite but if have never seen this before. The stuff is like sticky brown syrup and turns gummy when it dries. I've seen tree sap before and it doesn't appear to be that. There is only one are that this is showing in on the home. A slight bug concentration seems to be present but I cant tell if the bugs or the ooze came first.
Asked by nyclive2u - Wed Oct 14 22:07:10 2009 - Garden & Landscape - 5 Answers - Comments
A. I'll bet the wood is probably some sort of pine . . . and that would make the "syrup" just sap from undercured wood. By the way, some insects are attracted to the sap, but the sap oozed out first. Don't worry, it isn't a symptom of termite infestation (swarming or non-swarming). You can try removing really hard crystallized sap with a putty knife or scraper before repainting or refinishing, or you can also try to soften it up and remove it with turpentine or even mineral spirits. Good luck!

A. I have a bit for my Dremil for just that job. Cleans it out like using a hot knife on butter. But, you have to be very carefull as it does cut fast and you have to make sure you don't scar up the tiles.

4. What are the distributions of siliceous ooze and calcareous ooze and what are the causes of these?
Q. 7-4. What are the distributions of siliceous ooze and calcareous ooze and what are the causes of these distributions?
Asked by myyahoo! - Sat Dec 2 09:41:30 2006 - Earth Sciences & Geology - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Both come from marine plankton living near the surface that have died and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Those that make their shells from calcium carbonate (cocoliths, forams, etc.) are most common and produce calcareous oozes when they collect in high enough concentrations on the ocean floor. Others make their bodies out of silica (radiolaria and diatoms). These produce the siliceous ooze sediments. It should be noted that few of these sediment deposits will be found anywhere near shore. In those places, there is a lot more sediment washing off the continents (lithogenic), which accretes at a much faster rate. So even if there is a lot of planktonic bodies sinking to the bottom, it usually won't be enough to reach concentrations high… [cont.]

What is the liquid that often oozes from the stored corn silage and why does it make animals sick?
Q. Stored corn silage often oozes liquid that collects at the base of the silo. The cats that drink this silo liquid become sick and woozy. Why is that? And what exactly is that liquid?
Asked by Hanna - Tue Oct 9 06:19:19 2007 - Botany - 2 Answers - Comments
A. It is called silage effluent and contains fermentation products of the corn. The fermentation doesn't occur using the yeast that we normally think of, but rather a mix of naturally occurring yeasts and bacteria. The effluent also has a high amount of nitric acid in it. Either of these--bacterial fermentation products and nitric acid could make the animals sick upon ingestion of it

What is the red liquid that oozed out of a very rare steak?
Q.
Asked by Buffarini - Sat Nov 27 19:16:40 2010 - Other - Food & Drink - 11 Answers - Comments
A. The red liquid that oozes out of a very rare steak ISN'T blood, but myoglobin, a relative of blood. Myoglobin is a single-chain globular protein that is structurally related to hemoglobin. Hemoglobin conveys a oxygen through the body by the bloodstream. Because many animals need oxygen in the muscles faster than the circulatory system can deliver it, they store myoglobin in their muscles. In an animal is running away from a predator, the muscles use the myoglobin while hemoglobin is en route. Almost all the blood in a very rare steak has already been removed before the steak is delivered to the market.

What is the substance oozing out of bottom of doors on hot days on 2003 VW Jetta?
Q. This appears to be some type of corrosion preventive as it has a waxy viscosity (similar to paraffin) and only oozes out on days when temperature is in excess of 90 degree F. It has been going on for about two years. There does not seem to be any consequences to this event except for cleaning up the rocker panels and ground surface under the car.

How do I stop my nostril from oozing black liquid?
Q. I just came back from Congo on a mission trip and I recently have had black stuff oozing out of my nose. My fingernails just started falling off too. I also had a little bit of blood in my diarrhea. What should I do? I took some tylenol but it didn't help much. I'm almost done with my bottle of 100 of them and it's only been 2 days.

A. Popi Cacas you're so hot. That trip to the Congo must have really done a number on you. Hate to break it to you but you only have 2 days to live. Sounds like you got The Black Plague! I had it not too long ago too but they shot me up with drugs for a month and my blood stopped turning to black motor oil. My fingernails are finally growing back which is great because I love chewing on them when i'm hungry. I can only eat pea soup now for the rest of my life and I have to drink tar to empty my stomach of the dry blood goo I swallowed when I had my first episode. Get help quick Popi Cacas! You can still make it! They tylenol must have helped too i'm sure. I take a bottle of advil liquigels a day. Good stuff!

Is it normal for cuts or deep scrapes to constantly ooze a yellowish fluid that hardens?
Q. Just a few of my sister's bicycle wounds are oozing a yellow fluid that eventually hardens and makes the bandages stick to her skin (making them painful to take off so she can change them). The only other time I've seen this was recently on a mosquito bite on my ankle. My parents say it's normal, but is it?
Asked by Ketchup - Sun Jul 27 01:50:32 2008 - First Aid - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Does it look red & tender around the area, any red lines/streak running up the limb, and does your sister feel unwell with a fever or chills and is the yellow stuff creamy white, or a clear yellow fluid? If the yellow stuff is creamy and she has any swelling, tenderness and a red line/streak going up the limb or a fever, she needs to be assessed by a doctor. If the dressing has stuck to the wound, try soaking it off in warm salty water, pat it dry and apply a non-stick dressing, this will prevent re-opening the wound, every time the dressing is changed, which can cause an infection.

Q. I just moved into an older house and tried to vacuum the second floor when the circuit breaker tripped. OK...went to the basement and reset it. Tried to vacuum again, it tripped again. Upon resetting it the second time, I noticed the black ooze coming from around that breaker. 1) What is the ooze 2) Do I need to do anything other than replacing the breaker?

A. You need to pull that breaker out fast.. There is nothing in a circuit breaker to ooze. you have burnt it and it is in melt down.. watch for fire.. don't use that breaker anymore.. Replace it immediately.. I made Square D circuit breakers. you are about to have a fire if you continue to use it. Check with an electrician you may need to use a bigger circuit breaker to hold the electricity that you are wanting to use on it. hope you change this soon before your house burns down you are running to many things on the one line.

What could be responsible for the change from a formaminiferal ooze to a core that is brownish-gray?
Q. You are describing a deep-sea sediment core from the base up. In the bottom part, most of the sediment is a formaminiferal ooze; midway to the top, however, the ooze disappears and the core is brownish-gray. What could be responsible for this change?
Asked by Aishah77 - Wed May 7 03:28:32 2008 - Earth Sciences & Geology - 1 Answers - Comments
A. A change in the sea level and the CCD (carbonate compensate dept). For a foram ooze to form it must be above the CCD. Under the CCD all the calcium carbonate from shells is dissolved in the water so it cannot be deposited. The CCD is around 5km dept, depending on where you are. If the ooze was in water of 1km dept the shells can be easily deposited. If this area was somehow changed to much deeper water of around 5km it will be below the CCD and the shells will dissolve. This can happen due to tectonic activity(isostacy). Another thing is in deeper water there is less formaniferal life than in shallow water so even if the area is not under the CCD its less likely for the dead forams to fall the 3or 4 km to the seafloor
